Bromyard in 1838
The town of Bromyard, situated in the north-east of the county of Herefordshire, is in the hundred of Broxash, the market-day is Monday, the distance from Worcester 14 miles, from London 126.
The river Frome flows through this market-town, which is the smallest in the county. The church is Norman, with flanking aisles and a low central tower ; it contains an ancient font. At Tower Hill House, within the town, Charles I found shelter on the night of September 3, 1644. The town contains many ancient timber-framed houses. There is a grammar school dating from the time of Elizabeth.
